July 31
That night Beetle and I decided to attempt a 50 mile day together. We needed Cory to slack pack us so I texted him to pick us up. We woke up late and the old man made us breakfast. We didn’t want to leave so it was 1:30PM before we started our longest day yet which was admittedly unwise.
Cory took our packs and drove us to the trailhead and we took off through Connecticut and into Massachusetts. We had a blast laughing, jogging, running down trail, taking pictures, and lapping up fresh stream water like deer, Giardia be damned!
We made it 40 miles before nightfall around 8:30PM and another 7 miles before we got stuck in the middle of a torrential downpour with loud thunder and bright lighting very close. It was eerie and intimidating and not necessarily safe. We paused around 10PM in a shelter and split a KIND bar, the only snack we had left. We had barely eaten that day. We tried to wait out the storm but when it didn’t relent, we decided to call it quits and backtrack to a trailhead where Cory would meet us. Beetle slept in his hammock and I slept in the back of the Jeep with Cory.
